Horizon
This home’s position at the end of a cul-de-sac high on the slopes of Lion’s Head, the iconic mountain that forms part of Cape Town’s dramatic backdrop, offered an opportunity to design a house for a rare and sought-after location.
Throughout the interior, natural materials such as timber and raw concrete predominate, combined with the extensive use of Carrara marble panels on the walls, notably in the kitchen. While providing a rich, tactile palette, these materials remain unobtrusive. In the case of the marble panelling, they seem slightly offset from the architecture, creating a sense of lightness while articulating the interior volumes in the purest manner. The minimalism of the interior design celebrates the owner’s collection of contemporary, sculptural, and conceptual art and design. Certain architectural elements, such as the ribbon-like staircases and the cross-shaped reflective stainless-steel pillars, become sculptural features themselves.
Through its richly textured minimalism, the architecture and interior design mediates the experience of place while setting a stage for life.
