Art House
This contemporary home is located in a small, prestigious property development cluster in Sandhurst, Johannesburg – an area with a genteel, leafy calm about it but also provides easy access to much of the vibrant city. The brief for this spacious home was to find the perfect balance between functionality, comfort and aesthetics.
The owner requested an “easy living” space that was calm, graceful and restrained, but expressed individuality and sophistication. Much emphasis was placed on a very considered selection of high quality fabrics and materials that subtly express luxury and refinement. OKHA also created many hand crafted bespoke pieces allowing the clean lines and pure forms of contemporary design to communicate personality and elegance. By using natural fabrics and finishes and a narrow, mostly monochromatic colour palette, it allowed the owner’s collection of contemporary African art to make bold and distinctive statements.
Every vase, sculpture, artwork and furniture object was given enough meditative space to allow it to be seen and appreciated. The interiors contain solid forms, softened with geometric shapes which highlight the owner’s collection of local South African art.
The colour palette was a guiding factor for the design and décor. The darker hues of the exterior surfaces are in stark contrast to the light filled and fresh interior, we wanted a transition, a mood shift, a different experience from outside to in. The grey wall on the upstairs mezzanine area is a heavily textured, crystallite surface that brings a raw, brute finish to the interior, bringing the outside in and helps delineate the interior architectural spaces.
